What is a BPSS check?
A BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) check is the UK government’s pre-employment screening standard for individuals working in sensitive or secure roles, particularly within the public sector or organisations handling sensitive data.
It brings together four key elements: Identity Verification, Right to Work, Criminal Record check (Basic DBS), and employment history verification. Together, these checks ensure that a candidate is who they say they are, legally allowed to work, and has no serious risks in their background that would compromise the role.
BPSS is often the minimum requirement for government contracts and security-cleared roles, making it a critical step for compliance and risk reduction in hiring.

Identity verification using official records.
-
